IMPAX (Innovation and Modernization Patuxent River), the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division
(NAWCAD) partnership intermediary for experimentation, technology demonstration, and prototyping,
recently coordinated a demonstration of a miniaturized transponder for potential Group 2 and 3
unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications. This demonstration was the first of several planned to
characterize the current state of the art in miniaturized transponders ahead of the January 2020
mandate for Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast‐ Out capability in small UAVs. Over 30
engineers and acquisition professionals from the Navy and Army attended the event at an off‐base
IMPAX facility in Lexington Park, Maryland on November 15th. IMPAX was established to identify,
evaluate and support delivery of emerging technologies to Warfighters.
