uAvionix and R Cubed Engineering Successfully Demonstrate Miniature Military Transponder for Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)

uAvionix today announced that a partnership with R Cubed Engineering (R3E) has resulted in a successful demonstration of a secure, miniaturized military mode transponder at an Innovation and Modernization Patuxent River (IMPAX) event, during October 2020.

In late 2019, uAvionix joined a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program awarded to R3E with U.S. Navy and U.S. Army sponsorship.  Now in Phase III, the SBIR program has an objective to create a military mode micro transponder to be certified under the Department of Defense (DoD) Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (AIMS) Program.

The uAvionix RT-2087/ZPX is the world’s smallest miniaturized military mode transponder, weighing in at only 53 grams.  It performed flawlessly during a demonstration witnessed by NAVAIR’s PMA-213 (Naval Air Traffic Management Systems) and IMPAX personnel.  Kickoff discussions with PMA‑213 (Small Tactical Unmanned Systems) for integration of the RT-2087/ZPX with the RQ-21A Blackjack also were held.
